Each One Teach One

Each One Teach One program strives to provide basic and plain language financial knowledge, in the community, by volunteer staff from our credit union. Our main goal is to empower individuals to make the right financial decisions for themselves and their families. It is offered in the form of 60 - 90 minute workshop session in which one out of 17 topics is covered by our staff volunteer.

1. Introduction to Basic Banking

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to choose the right bank account for your needs, how to make interest work for you — not against you, and ways to reduce your account and transaction fees.

2. Introduction to Basic Budgeting

In this workshop, you’ll learn what a budget is and why should you create one. You’ll also receive tips to help you reach your financial goals and ideas to help you adjust your spending.

 

3. Filing Taxes in Canada

Join this workshop to learn how income taxes are used, why it makes sense to file your tax return – even if you don’t owe money, and the benefits available to lower-income tax-payers in Canada.

4. Credit Cards and Prepaid Cards

Learn the advantages and disadvantages of credit cards and prepaid cards, the important things to look for in a prepaid card agreement, and how to figure out the real cost of using credit and prepaid cards.

5. Loans: Costs and Obligations

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to decide what kind of loan is best for your needs, how to understand payment terms and obligations and how interest in calculated and why it matters.

6. Debt Smarts

Join this workshop to learn tips for managing your debt, when it makes sense to get a consolidation loan and the difference between consumer proposal and bankruptcy.

7. Loans You Don’t Want

In this workshop, we cover the different types of loans available and how to calculate the real cost of ‘bad’ loans. Also learn why payday loans and pawnshop loans are a terrible option and the real cost of using credit card cash advances.

8. Building a Healthy Credit History

In this workshop, we’ll share why your credit history is important, the simple steps you can take to build a good credit score, and what to do if you need to get yourself out of financial trouble.

9. Understanding Contracts

In this workshop, you’ll learn all about contracts, including what makes a contract valid, things to watch for in a cellphone contract, and why you should avoid rent-to-own contracts.

10. Identity Theft and Fraud Prevention

In this workshop, you’ll learn how thieves steal and use your personal information, tips to keep your financial and personal information safe and what to do if you’re the victim of fraud or identity theft.

11. Financial Wellness for Seniors

In this workshop, you’ll learn about seniors’ financial abuse, how to recognize if you or a loved one is being taken advantage of and the advanced planning tools available to protect yourself or loved ones.

12. RRSPs and TFSAs

Join this workshop to learn the benefits of using RRSPs and TFSAs, and how to decide whether to invest in an RRSP, a TFSA or both. You’ll also learn about the different kinds of RRSP and TFSA products available.

13. Introduction to Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs)

In this workshop, you’ll learn what an RESP is and how they work, how to decide what kind of RESP is best for your family and how to take advantage of free money via government grants and programs to help grow your RESP.

14. Home Readiness (1) : Renting vs. Owning

In this workshop, you’ll learn if homeownership is right for you in your current stage of life, how to plan for homeownership and about the upfront and ongoing costs of owning a home.

15. Home Readiness (2) : Costs of Ownership

This workshop takes a deeper dive into the costs of homeownership and mortgages, including how a mortgage works, the different types of mortgages available, how to save on your mortgage and more.

16. Home Readiness (3) : Choosing the Right Home

This workshop will prospective homebuyers understand and navigate the many home options available, such as the difference between buying a new and a pre-owned home and how to pick a home that meets your needs now and in the future.

17. Home Readiness (4) : Getting Professional Help

In this workshop you’ll learn how to identify which professionals you’ll need, what the roles and responsibilities are for different professionals, and how to find the right professional for you.

Each One Teach One also offers free online financial literacy modules that you can access anytime, anywhere. These self-paced courses provide a broad overview of key topics featured in the Each One Teach One workshops. They’re ideal for learning on a tight schedule, as each module takes about 30 minutes to complete. While the online courses don't cover all the material from a full workshop session, they’re a great way to begin building your financial knowledge.
